Born in the pits. Built for the race.

A Canadian, family-owned business

Materiaal grew out of years spent racing, working in the pits, and learning firsthand what it takes to compete at the highest level. Built on a family’s love of cyclocross, we set out to create race-ready wheels shaped by the demands of the sport.

Racing was always a family adventure

For years, Sidney McGill has competed at the international level, racing UCI Cyclocross World Cups across Europe and North America. But racing was never just an individual pursuit. It was a family affair.

Sidney's dad Geoffrey served as her head mechanic. Her sister Abbey played an equally vital role in the team behind her racing. Through long winters on the World Cup circuit, Geoffrey and Abbey spent race days in the pits, known in Dutch as the materiaalpost. They cleaned bikes, prepared equipment, cheered from the sidelines, and did whatever it took to keep Sidney moving forward.

The pits became our home away from home. They were where the hard work happened between laps, where races could be won or lost, and where we learned firsthand what equipment needs to withstand when the conditions get tough.

From the Materiaalpost to Materiaal wheels

Originally, @materiaalpost was a way to document our adventures in cyclocross: the travel, the racing, the muddy winters, and the people who make this sport special. Season after season on the World Cup circuit gave us a close-up view of the demands placed on racers and their equipment.

We saw an opportunity to do something different.

We recognized a gap in the market for lightweight, responsive, race-ready wheels engineered around the realities of cyclocross. Wheels that perform when the course turns muddy, the corners get technical, and every acceleration matters. So we went to work.

Working alongside engineers, we set out to develop wheels that balance low weight, responsiveness, and the durability required for the unpredictable demands of cyclocross. Every design decision is informed by experience in the sport and a commitment to creating equipment that serves a clear purpose.

From the way a wheel accelerates out of a corner to how it responds on rough, off-camber terrain, we believe the details matter. When you’re racing at the limit, equipment is part of the performance.

Built on experience. Driven by purpose.

Materiaal is the result of years spent traveling to races, working in the pits, supporting athletes, and learning what it takes to compete at the highest level.

Sidney's experience racing across North America and Europe has been an essential part of this process. Competing on the world stage has given her firsthand insight into what equipment needs to deliver under the toughest conditions. Her knowledge, experience, and feedback have played a key role in shaping the development of Materiaal wheels, helping to refine our designs around the demands of racing.

That perspective continues to shape everything we do. We build equipment for racers who value precision and reliability, and who are always looking for ways to improve.

Supporting athletes like Sidney, working with emerging racers, and helping young riders access the equipment they need to compete at national and international levels are all part of what Materiaal stands for. The next generation deserves the opportunity to chase big goals, and we’re proud to play a part in that journey.

More than wheels

Materiaal began as a family on the sidelines, in the pits, and on the road to the next race. It has grown into something bigger, but the foundation remains the same: a love of racing, a respect for the work behind performance, and a belief that the best equipment comes from understanding the people who use it.

We’re still learning, still refining, and still chasing the next improvement. Just like the racers we build for.
